Dr Cath Becker
|
Cath’s career has ranged from education to medicine, to combining the two – and she still has time for a husband, four children, and competing in triathlons! After initially training as a teacher, Cath studied medicine at Otago University and spent her early years as a surgeon before making the move to general practice. Her background is kept in the foreground by running minor surgery sessions, including vasectomies, skin grafts and excisions.
“I’m in a great position at Masterton Medical as I can tailor the job to do what is important to me, like minor surgery and Outreach programmes in the community such as the Kura Kaupapa Maori clinic – and have the support of the whole team,” says Cath.
Instigated by Cath, and winner of the 2004 Health Innovation Awards, the Kura Kaupapa Maori clinic is based at the only Maori language school in the Wairarapa (Te Kura Kaupapa Maori O Wairarapa), offering free medical services to all pupils and their whanau.
“We saw a need for the clinic to address the escalating problems with Maori health, and it is much easier to do that in the comfortable environment of the school.”
