Dr Rita Middleton

After graduating from the University of Alberta in Canada, Rita travelled all around the world as a GP and with her sub-specialty training in infectious diseases, until arriving in New Zealand in the late 1980s.

“We decided New Zealand was the best place to raise our kids, and Masterton offered a safe community that is peaceful but also close to the bright lights of the city,” says Rita.

Rita also finds general practice work rewarding.

“I love my job – it is so satisfying and interesting, and can be fun sometimes. What other job gives you a new problem to solve every 15 minutes?”

“It’s also incredibly beneficial working in a large practice because the support systems from the administration and nursing staff, as well as the other doctors makes our lives easier, so we can focus better on our patient’s healthcare.”

Rita also works closely with patients who have been sexually abused, and is a member of DSAC, an organisation that trains doctors to provide the specialised care that sexual abuse victims require.
