Trainee Interns

Trainee Interns are final year medical stdents who are doing a series of 4 week runs through a hospital department or general practice gaining practical experience with patient contact, and who are still under the training of the Wellington School of Medicine through Otago University.
We have the pleasure of welcoming a new TI into our practice every month and have benefitted from the contribution these knowledgeable and enthusiastic young people make to our practice.  They work under the guidance of one of our GPs in practical patient consultations.
Where appropriate, the TI will conduct a patient consultation on his or her own and this will be followed up in discussion and supervision from the GP who takes full responsibility.  Our GPs have warmed to the challenge and responsibility of passing on their knowledge and experience to the next generation as well as being challenged to come to terms with new ways of doing medicine!

Registrar Training Programme

A Registrar is a qualified doctor with several years' experience undertaking advanced training in the vocational scope of General Practice.  We work closely with the Royal New Zealand College of GPs and the Clinical Training Agency in supervising our Registrars.
The Registrar will usually be placed in our practice for 6 months and will work under the supervision of an accredited GP Teacher who is a Fellow of the RNZCGP.  The Registrar will usually work from their own consulting room and consult with a small but steady patient base.  The Registrar and Teacher will meet regularly to discuss the Registrars' work and provide suitable guidance in the art of being a GP.
The Registrar will also meet regularly with fellow students in Wellington at seminars where topics important to a full understanding of General Practice are explored in depth.  After 2 attachments the registrar will sit exams, and if successful will proceed with several more years towards full memebership of the College, and Vocational Registration.
