General Overview of Masterton Medical

We formed Masterton Medical in August 2002 with the aim of providing the best possible primary health care in the Wairarapa.
We work from a modern, purpose built building incorporating a high standard of medical and nursing facilities.

We are a team of eleven general practitioner partners. You will be working in a happy work environment with a solid foundation of peer and collegial support.  We have an excellent nursing and administration team and all practice management is dealt with on a sound and professional basis.  The practice has high quality IT systems.

Masterton, a town of 20,000, is the centre of the Wairarapa rural district.  People chose to live here because of the excellent lifestyle choices together with first-class schooling facilities. While we enjoy the benefits a great environment the capital city, Wellington with all it’s delights, is an hour and a half drive away.

Masterton is supported by a small base hospital providing most secondary health care services including medical, surgical, maternity and mental health.  The hospital is a new purpose-built building which was completed in 2006.  Tertiary cases are usually referred to Wellington or Palmerston North.  GPs have a strong collegial support base with the hospital specialists.

We have a highly skilled and motivated nursing team.  The focus in our practice is on clinical professional development and forging strong working relationships between our Nurses and GPs.

We have developed nurse lead clinics focusing on Cardiovascular, Respiratory and Diabetes issues. Along with the daily general practice services triaged by the nurses they also cover specialised areas such as Sexual Health, Smoking Cessation and Travel Vaccinations.  Our work in the Occupational Health field is growing by day.

We are a teaching practice and are keen to encourage young and trainee GPs through our facility.  We do this through our Trainee Intern and Registrar teaching programme.

We enjoy a regular run of Trainee Interns through the practice with TI’s rostered to all GPs on a regular basis.  GPs enjoy the stimulation and challenge of fresh young minds and we have found that patients are quite happy to be part of the teaching programme.

We have a more formal teaching structure in place for our Registrars with two permanently designated GP teachers interacting with the Registrars.  We make a point of treating our Registrars on a professional basis and make sure all their needs are catered for in the practice.  Our Registrar teaching programme rates very highly in our strategic plan

Masterton Medical is part of the Wairarapa Primary Health Care Organization which has seen the introduction of capitated, or bulk funding, replace the traditional fee for service model.  This change has had a very positive impact on our financial viability since it was introduced in January 2003.

We operate the Wairarapa After Hours Service from our premises. This provides a 24 hour 7 day a week service to the people of the Wairarapa.  We have a base of 26 participating GPs on the roster making for an easy roster of about 1in 10 and a reasonable income when we do work.  The service is backed up by a national telephone triage system after 8.00pm at night.

We offer a wide range of medical and primary health services with an increasing emphasis of health promotion in the community, especially with the Long Term Chronic Disease programme.  We have a very successful Maori Outreach Clinic and we are establishing closer bonds with other Maori Health providers.

Our premises house a laboratory which provides us access to standard lab and pathology reports, as well as a physiotherapist and a pharmacy. We have just finished expanding our building to accommodate further medical and nursing clinics as we heave reached capacity in many areas.

August  2008.
