Masterton Medical History

THE HISTORY OF 24 LINCOLN RD - THE MASTERTON MEDICAL SITE

The people of Masterton and the surrounding districts have received medical, social and spiritual care on this site for well over a century.

Dr William Butement was the first doctor to practice here, establishing his surgery in August 1893. He was followed by Dr Percival Robert Cook, with his son, Dr Wyvern Cook, taking up general practice too.

Dr Wyvern Cook was joined in partnership first by Dr Graham Moore, then by Dr Peter Perry. In 1968 the large two storey doctors’ house was bought by the Salvation Army and used as a family care centre.

The Salvation Army established its work on this site in 1903, on land donated by the Woodroffe family. Their first meetings were held in the main hall which is now used as the pharmacy.

After the Salvation Army moved, the buildings served the Taiwhenua of Ngati Kahungunu Ki Wairarapa in 2000. The old doctors’ house was relocated to Bennett’s Hill in 2002.

Masterton Medical opened in August 2002, and acknowledges the commitment and community spirit of all those who have worked here for more than a century.
